The Structure of Anthocyanin is the Key to the Treatment of Colon Cancer

A study in the United States has shown that the structure of anthocyanin plays a key role in the treatment of cancer. Anthocyanins are anti-oxidant pigments extracted from fruits and vegetables. The study convinced that some types of anthocyanins are more powerful than others in treating cancer.

Pu Jing, leader of the study from Ohio State University, said that the chemical structure of anthocyanins has a significant impact on their biological activity. The data showed that non-acyl monosaccharide anthocyanins have a stronger ability to inhibit the proliferation of colon cancer cell.

Researchers believe that more studies are necessary to reveal the structure and blood protection effect of anthocyanins.

A scientific model was added in this study to show the potential anticancer capabilities of the most common anti-oxidant mixtures. In 2006, researchers from the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition found that anthocyanin was the main cause of cell death in the programmed cell region among different phenolic substances extracted from berries.

Research data

Jing, with his colleagues, compared the effects of blood protection of anthocyanin-rich concentrates (ARE) from purple corn, chokeberry, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, purple radish, grape, radish, and elderberry. Their effects on the proliferation of colon cancer cells (HT29 cell line) were measured by the growth inhibition (GI50) grade.

The results showed that anthocyanin activity of purple corn was the strongest, with a GI50 grade of 14 mg/ml, and chokeberry and Vaccinium vitis-idaea ranked second, followed by the purple radish and grape. The least active is radish and elderberry with a GI50 grade of 100 mg/ml.

The researchers said that anthocyanins play an important role in the effect of blood protection of ARES and demonstrate the synergy with other phenolic substances.

Structure analysis

After analyzing the structure of anthocyanins, the researchers found that non-acylated monosaccharide anthocyanins had stronger inhibition on the proliferation of HT29 cells. On the other hand, the inhibitory ability of pelargonidin, trisaccharide and acyl anthocyanin is relatively low.

The results of the study are consistent with the results of other similar studies, indicating that anthocyanins play a major role in blood protection in foods and commodities rich in anthocyanins. The results of this study shall be considered when developing functional foods rich in anthocyanins and selecting crops.

Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in the United States according to the American Cancer Society. About 150,000 new cases will be added this year, among which the ratio of male to female patients will be 1:1.
